Running should feel freeing. It should clear the mind, strengthen the body, and help us feel connected to our communities. But for too many women and girls, running outdoors also comes with fear, hesitation, or an exhausting mental checklist of safety precautions.
” I have to put so many things in place when I run alone… I take my phone, don’t wear headphones, stick to well-lit routes. But ultimately, I’m on edge the whole time. “
Comments like this are all too common – and they highlight a reality women and girls face every day.
Recent research shows:
-
92% of women worry about their safety while running
-
51% fear physical attack
-
38% have experienced harassment
-
Many report anxiety, reduced confidence, and even giving up running altogether
No one should feel like this. No one should have to stop doing something they love because they don’t feel safe.
That’s why She Runs exists – to help women and girls run …

Between 15th January & 2nd February 2026, as part of the She Runs Movement we conducted an online survey, to understand how safe people—predominantly women—feel when running or being physically active outdoors in Rossendale, particularly during darker hours. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out our survey.
Let’s keep the conversations going about safer, brighter running in Rossendale.
