Small Event of the Year – Rossendale Triathlon
This award recognises the remarkable achievements of triathlon events that host fewer than 200 participants, yet provide an exceptional experience in swimming, cycling, and running for competitors of all skill levels.
The Rossendale Triathlon, now approaching its 20th year, is recognised as an outstanding and inclusive event that works closely with the local community to deliver a positive and engaging experience for all involved.
The event is planned and organised by a small dedicated and selfless committee of five volunteers who are all members of the Rossendale Triathlon Club. The sole aim of the organising committee is to make the day memorable and exciting for athletes, spectators and volunteers, whilst also ensuring all profits are injected back into promoting the growth of the club as well as supporting the community. The event attracts athletes of all abilities, many of them first timers, with many entrants raising money for charities. To enable people to get the most out of the day, the club held a recce day, enabling new competitors to build confidence in advance of the race itself.
To enhance the event and involve more of the community, the race committee worked closely with Rossendale Leisure Trust to hold their first local Swim Bike Run event prior to the race itself. This attracted 13 entries, 12 of which were female, a number of whom have now completed the Rossendale Triathlon and have gone on to become club members.
On the same day as the Rossendale Triathlon, the committee also support a ‘mini triathlon’ for members of the Rossendale Rays. The Rays are a registered charity who provide sports opportunities for disabled and vulnerable children and young adults, which is currently accessed by over 250 families. The Rossendale Triathlon provide medals and certificates for the event, and the committee also support the event by helping with the activities on the day. The event also supports the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team (RPMRT), by donating money to them to provide emergency support during the race in return.
The Rossendale Triathlon draws together the community before and during the event, providing a relaxed and safe environment for all to enjoy the day and to ensure that everyone who takes part feels like a winner.
Triathlon England is very pleased to present the Small Event of the Year to the Rossendale Triathlon.
