This Mental Health Awareness Week, the focus is on one powerful idea: action.
Looking after your mental health doesn’t have to mean making big changes or completely overhauling your routine. In fact, it’s often the small, everyday actions that make the biggest difference over time.
When life feels busy or overwhelming, even simple habits can help you feel more grounded, improve your mood, and support your overall wellbeing. The key is consistency—not perfection.
Here are ten quick and practical actions you can try, both inside and outside the gym, to support your mental health.
1. Open a window
Something as simple as letting fresh air into your space can help you feel more awake, clear-headed, and connected to your surroundings. Natural light and ventilation can make a surprising difference to your mood.
2. Try a gentle stretch or chair-based movement
You don’t need a full workout to feel the benefits of movement. Gentle stretching, mobility work, or even seated exercise can help release tension and reduce stress quickly.
3. Spend time outdoors
Getting outside, even briefly, can help lower stress levels and improve focus. A short walk, sitting in a park, or simply stepping outside for fresh air can help reset your mind.
4. Drink more water
Hydration plays a bigger role in mental wellbeing than many people realise. Drinking enough water can support concentration, energy levels, and mood throughout the day.
5. Try a breathing exercise
Slow, controlled breathing can help calm the nervous system and reduce feelings of stress or anxiety. Even a minute or two can help you feel more settled and focused.
6. Take a moment of mindfulness
You don’t need long sessions to feel the benefits of mindfulness. Simply pausing to notice your surroundings, your breath, or how your body feels can help bring you back into the present moment.
7. Connect with someone
Reaching out to a friend, family member, or colleague can have a real impact on how you feel. Even a short conversation can help you feel more supported and less alone.
8. Create a simple wind-down routine
Good quality sleep is closely linked to mental wellbeing. Building a consistent evening routine—such as reading, reducing screen time, or having a warm drink—can help you relax and rest better.
9. Practise gratitude
Taking a moment each day to notice a few things you’re grateful for can help shift focus towards the positive. It doesn’t need to be big—small moments count.
10. Be kind to yourself
Not every day will feel easy, and that’s okay. Recognising what you’ve managed to do—no matter how small—can help build a more balanced and compassionate mindset.
Why small actions matter
Improving mental health can feel overwhelming, especially when you don’t know where to start. But research shows that small, consistent actions are often the most effective way to build long-term wellbeing.
When repeated regularly, these actions can become habits—things you do almost automatically. Over time, this can help you feel more balanced, more in control, and better able to manage stress.
You don’t need to wait for motivation. You just need to start with one small step.
Take action this week
This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re encouraging everyone to focus on action—not perfection.
Whether it’s a gym session, a swim, a class, or simply taking a moment for yourself, every small action counts.
Start where you are. Do what you can. And remember—showing up is already progress.
