Rawtenstall Walking Routes
Rawtenstall 30-minute walk
- From the main bus station turn right onto Kay Street. Walk to the end of Kay Street and turn left in front of the cricket grounds. Once opposite the health centre use the pedestrian crossing to cross over. Continue along Bacup Road. Take the first right after Nino’s restaurant. Go under the subway and cross over the river. Turn left in front of the houses called ‘Merry Trees’ row.
- Follow the path in front of the houses and keep going until the path turns right leading up between fields. Make your way up the gradual incline and turn right before the private house. Walk to the gate. From here you will have views over Rossendale ski slope. Go through the gate and keep to path following it round passed the chimney. You will then come to another gate. Go through the gate.
- Make your way down the path until you reach some garages. Make your way past the garages onto the top of Yaraville street. Walk down Yaraville Street and turn right onto Fallbarn Cresent. At the bottom of Fallbarn Cresent veer right to follow the river. Once you arrive back at the row of houses called Merry Trees cross back over the river, under the subway and retrace your steps back along Bacup Road. Cross again in from of the health centre. Turn right up past the cricket grounds onto Kay Street and make your way back to the bus station.
Rawtenstall 60-minute walk
- From the bus station turn left onto Kay Street. Walk till you reach bank Street, the main high street in Rawtenstall town centre. Turn left onto Bank Street. Cross over Saint Mary’s Way and head left past the petrol station and St Marys Chambers. Keep walking until you reach the entrance for Whittaker Park.
- Turn right into Whitaker Park. Walk up through the park passing the Museum & Art Gallery on your left. Follow the park signs that say ski and snowboard centre.
- Make your way up through Whitaker Park passing the tennis courts and playpark as you go. Leave the park through the top exit, which is opposite to The Hill, Rosendale ski slope.
- Enter The Hill by the road entrance and walk up towards the main building. There is a log cabin to the far left of the car park. Take the steep path up by the log cabin. At the top there are steps. Go up the steps and turn right at the top. Keep to this path and you will see the fishing lodges to your right. Follow the path down and round to the right. You will come out opposite Beech Street.
- Turn right onto Beech Street. Cross over at Greenfield Street and make your way to Whittle Street. Go down Whittle Street, turn left at the bottom onto Thornhill. Walk down to the traffic lights and cross over the road. Walk to Rawtenstall market and cross using the zebra crossing.
- Head back up Bank Street and make your way back to Rawtenstall bus station.
Rawtenstall 90-minute walk
- From the station turn left onto kay Street. Turn right and walk along Bank Street, the main high street in Rawtenstall town centre. Turn right onto Newchurch Road and walk up past the marketplace.
- Make your way up Newchurch Road and look out for Waingates Road on the left. Turn onto Waingates Road and follow the path up alongside the stream. Follow the way marker to turn left in front of a small row of houses. Take the next right onto Hurst Lane. This is a steep climb up past Meadow Head Farm. Keep walking up hill past a small gate on your right. Look out for a stile on your right-hand side. Go over the stile and follow the narrow path between two fences.
- The woods will be on your left and a wall to your right.
- Cross over another small stile and take the path through the field to the next gate. Go through the gate and head down through the field keeping the wall to your right. Look out for another gate on your right. Go through the gate and follow the farm path downhill turning right onto Edge Lane.
- Walk all the way down Edge Lane until you reach the main road. Cross over Newchurch Road and make your way to the Red Lion Pub. Walk down Peel Street.
- Cross over the road at the bottom of Peel Street and then cross the river. Turn right onto Route 6 cycle way and walk along the river side.
- Cross over the bridge in front of Merry Trees houses and make your way under the subway.
- Turn left onto Bacup Road. After the cricket ground, turn right back onto Kay Street and make your way back to the bus station.
